What really happened to the British high street during the recession years, and what needs doing to preserve their future?
Geofutures’ Mark Thurstain-Goodwin and Gaynor Astbury contributed to an evidence based report ‘British High Streets: from Crisis to Recovery?’ recently produced by the University of Southampton for the the Government’s policy advisory group The Future High Streets Forum, and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
The report explores data on multiple aspects of high street performance, suggesting that a shift from retail to service-led uses and the role of independent and convenience retailers will all play a significant role in the future vitality of our urban centres.
Town centres are a well-established area of expertise for Geofutures, which created the original Town Centres Statistical Series for DCLG based on the practice’s Index of Town Centre Activity – a good example of a multi-variate index created through spatial statistical analysis and used to produce coherent insight any intelligent layman can use.
