Telecoms network planning for the next generation
Geofutures undertook a project for major telecommunications provider T-Mobile to help plan their third generation network in the capital.
Complex and dynamic variables such as work and commuting patterns, changes in the types of network demand (voice, data, imagery etc) over a working week and the impacts these have on network transmission capacity needed to be understood together for planning decisions to be made.
GIS tools allow numerous different, large datasets to be brought together, creating animations of changing demand patterns over space and time. The ease of visualisation of these multiple effects highlights even local-scale variations for which the new network had to provide.
