Energy Saving Trust
GIS powers energy analysis
The UK’s Energy Saving Trust is an independent, non-profit organisation funded by government and the private sector to help and advise consumers on reducing carbon emissions.
As part of their mission to promote sustainable use of energy and reduce waste, EST commissioned Geofutures to complete a pathfinder GIS analysis of domestic energy consumption over the past five years.
Among the aims of the study is a systematic nationwide analysis of home energy consumption against neighbourhood types and property age and type, to reveal key relationships and locations where the Trust can focus efforts on reducing waste.
Visualisations of energy consumption patterns instantly reveal patterns, trends and anomalies. The results will also be used in conjunction with other EST data to provide a joined-up view of current and changing energy use patterns.
The Bartlett School of Planning, University College London, is also contributing to EST’s work in this area. Geofutures founder Mark Thurstain-Goodwin was a senior research fellow at UCL’s Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis and the company continues to work alongside top academics in the GIS field.
The company’s long experience working with government departments and agencies also ensures a consistent and reliable approach to data standards and confidentiality.
